Island Games gold for Armstrong

Terrance Armstrong scooped Bermuda’s first gold medal at the Island Games yesterday after winning the men’s half marathon.

Armstrong, who missed out on securing a fourth-straight May 24 Half Marathon title this year after finishing third behind Larry Marshall and Jay Donawa, came in ahead of Donawa who won a bronze medal on the opening day of the Games, which are being held on the picturesque Greek island of Rhodes.

Armstrong’s finishing time was one hour, thirteen minutes and five seconds, while May 24 champion Dawn Richardson finished third in the women’s half marathon with her rival and Swedish veteran Victoria Fidick coming fourth.

Bermuda also captured gold in both male and female half marathon team events.

Elsewhere, sprinter Xavier James won heat two of the men’s 200 metres on the first day of track and field action yesterday, Daniel Tucker finished second in heat four of the men’s 200m and Melissa Clarke finished heat three of the women’s 100m in second.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda women’s football team beat Guernsey 3-1 in Group B, while Bermuda’s Under-23 men’s team beat Aland 2-0.

The Bermuda women’s basketball team lost against the Isle of Man 90-25 in Group A, with the men’s team beating Gibraltar 95-80.

Also in winning form were the women’s volleyball team who overcome Guernsey 3-0.

See tomorrow’s for more in-depth coverage and reaction to an encouraging start for the Island’s biggest ever Games squad.
