All in two days work

By Tricia Walters

Moving one piano is bad enough, but when the Bermuda School of Music moved to their new premises two weeks ago, they were faced with the daunting task of moving 17 pianos — including four grand pianos.

The thought alone left staff and their insurance company in a cold sweat, but for Fast Forward Freight manager, Luis Martins and his staff it was just another day at the office.

However Mr. Martins admitted that they had moved individual pianos before, but never this many and it took about 12 hours (over two days) to move all 17 from the schools' former location at the Old Colony Club to their new premises at Berkeley.

With the help of eight men, a truck, a crane, determination and muscle power the pianos were moved without a scratch — much to the relief of staff at the school who said they were just amazed that no piano was dropped.

Because the elevator at the old premises was too small, the pianos has to be craned "out of the building", put onto trucks and again craned up into the first and second floors of the new school.

"It was a walk in the park for us because we're accustomed to this kind of work," Mr. Martins concluded, with a chuckle.
