Robinson responds to criticism

By Scott Neil

Runner Otis Robinson has responded to criticism of his reported race split times, set in recent US events, by apologising to anyone he may have offended.

Two 'sports mailbox' letters from Bermuda international runner Jay Donawa in the past few days have questioned the credibility of mile splits set by Robinson during a number of 5K races in New Jersey.

Former Marathon Derby champion Kavin Smith has also expressed doubt about the infallibility of wrist GPS devices that record split times during events. Robinson has set a number of improved times in 5K races this year, which are not in doubt, however mile split times recorded on his GPS device have created anomalies and led to questions over the accuracy of the satellite-recorded distance or the race courses themselves.

Robinson said he wished to apologise to anyone who has may have been offended as a result of his reported times or comments.

He said: "I'm just going out to run for the memory of my late mum Deborah Elizabeth Santucci Smith (who died just before the May 24 race in 2006) and strive to improve.

"I want to thank the public for the support I receive when I am running and racing, and from many of the other runners."
