First National Heroes Day in October will honour Dame Lois
Government has announced an extra day's holiday this year as Bermuda transitions from a day off on the Queen's Birthday to a day off in October to mark National Heroes Day. This year's event will honour Dame Lois Browne Evans who was the first female Opposition leader in the Commonwealth as well as Bermuda's first female barrister and first black women MP. The Queen's Birthday Parade will take place on Saturday June 14 with a day off on Monday June 16 while the first national heroes day will be on Monday October 13,

The United Bermuda Party has called on Government to celebrate the newly-established National Heroes Day in June rather than in October because a summer holiday is more convenient for the public. Breaking news: Dame Lois Browne-Evans dies
Dame Lois Browne-Evans, the leader of the Progressive Labour Party for much of the 1970s and 1980s and Bermuda's first female Attorney General, died early this morning of a suspected stroke. She was 79. A statement from the Cabinet Office said Dame Lois, who would have celebrated her 80th birthday on June 1, was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital last night. Honouring Dame Lois: Public to have a say
The public will have a say in how best to honour Dame Lois Browne Evans. So far people have suggested a public holiday, special stamps or naming the proposed new court house after her. Dame Lois died on May 29 and was laid to rest at the the Cathedral during a national holiday on June 6 — over 1,000 crammed into the church for the service.

Petition launched to save Queen's Birthday holiday
A petition to keep the Queen's birthday as a public holiday in Bermuda has attracted more than 1,900 signatures in just four days. 'Retention of the Queen's Birthday holiday in Bermuda' was launched on international website GoPetition on Friday, following a Government announcement to establish a 'National Heroes Day' in October but remove the holiday to mark the Queen's Birthday as from next year. First National Heroes Day is for Dame Lois
The Premier has confirmed Dame Lois Browne Evans will remain the first person to be honoured if an alternative public holiday is found for 'National Heroes Day'. Government announced a U-turn over the renaming of Bermuda Day following public opposition. Minister of Culture and Social Rehabilitation Dale Butler said: "There was a lot of public outcry because Bermudians have now internalised the whole concept of Bermuda Day, and feel that more than any other holiday it is their day.

Lower court delays hearings
People who were due to attend Magistrates' Court on Tuesday for alleged traffic offences are being advised the session has been postponed due to the public holiday in honour of Dame Lois Browne Evans. The session will now take place on Thursday, June 7, at 2.30 p.m.

Chamber moves to clear up holiday confusion::
The Chamber of Commerce is reassuring companies there is no public holiday next week. Some individuals have contacted the Chamber for advice, as it seems some confusion remains as to whether October 12 is a holiday. One businessman told The Royal Gazette he believed this was partly due to pre-printed material marking the date.
